I have a set of 9 out of 12 books Royal Shakspere Edition de luxe printed by La Belle Sauvage Press, London. Limited to 1000 copies, not numbered. Greenish fabric cover with the golden inscription over the grave of Shakespeare, lots of plates and luxurious pages. I can not find a year of publication or any other info. What's the value of it and when was it published?|||A full set sold at auction for $230 in 2003, including the 20% buyer's premium. Rare books at auction frequently sell for their wholesale value, as the majority of buyers are purchasing for resale, so if you find a buyer on your own I'd ask $350-400 minimum for the full set.
Good Sheppard Fine Bindings of San Francisco has a full set listed online for $2450. That seems pretty optimistic to me, which is probably why it's still for sale. It's possible they were the auction winners, in which case they probably just listed it for roughly ten times what they paid, which is a pretty typical markup for scarce books in the absence of an established market price.
In any case, an incomplete set is typically worth far less than a complete one. It's not unusual for an edition like yours to drop 90% in value even if it's just missing one or two volumes, as collectors want the whole thing; no one wants the hassle of finding a replacement for a lost volume.
The auction listing estimated the printing date as circa 1915, and Good Sheppard claims it was 1916.
