Water use depends on soil type, temperature, sun exposure, etc. The above mentioned finger test is actually the only way to determine water needs. You can cover the soil with a dry organic mulch....straw, very dry grass clippings, etc to keep the soil under cover preventing water evaporation from the soil.
Gardeners really don't have great manicures, we are constantly sticking our fingers here and there.|||Keep the soil MOIST, but not soggy, stick your index finger about 3/4" in the soil, if moist do not water.
too much water will kill the plant.
